The Hidden Pollinators of the Evening Hours

Lena’s bottle featuring a bat and a moth.

My painting was inspired by an amazing creature discovered in the garden, a rare sight for the Chicago area: a Giant Sphinx Moth. These beautiful pollinators are most well known in Brazil, central America, and Florida, but they rarely make their way to the midwest, so this moth's parents made a long journey to be here. Once a large chrysalis, this moth emerged as a reminder that not all pollinators are butterflies or bees. Moths, insects, bats, and other creatures are also essential for our food system, spreading genetic material and bringing the evening sky to life. This bottle is an homage to the hidden pollinators of the evening hours, and the unsung heroes in our society who create social change and build movements for good without fame, and the migrants who bring beauty to distant places.
